  • The Challenge.

The Probation Board of Northern Ireland (PBNI) faced challenges in providing timely, effective, and accessible support to service users entering their probation period.

These challenges included limited communication and information sharing between service users and probation officers, difficulty in tracking progress and monitoring compliance with probation conditions, and lack of accessible resources and support services.

    The Approach.

Sugar Rush designed a mobile app to address the challenges faced by service users.

The app offered a range of features, including personalised support, appointment scheduling, progress tracking, secure communication, and a resource library, to provide comprehensive and accessible support throughout the probation period.

‘A dedicated dashboard provides users with tailored information and resources based on their individual needs and circumstances.’

Continuously improving the experience for users.

UX workshops and suggestions from service users led to the development of Phase 2 of the Mobile App. Building upon the initial success.

We introduced innovative features such as a Mood Journal, Alcohol Intake Tracker, and Appointment Reminders for Community and Mentor meetings. These tools, along with a wealth of digital resources, aimed to assist users in their reintegration into society.

We developed an appointment booking function within the mobile app to help avoid confusion or missed meet-ups, as seem to be one of the major issues of communication between users and their social workers.

    Journalling daily thoughts and experiences.

The app incorporates a robust mood journaling feature designed to help users track their emotional well-being and identify patterns or triggers.

Users could record their daily mood, thoughts, and experiences, providing valuable insights into their mental health journey. The journal entries were private and can be accessed at any time, allowing users to reflect on their progress and identify areas where they may need additional support.

Monitoring daily or weekly alcohol consumption.

The app includes a comprehensive alcohol tracker that allows users to monitor their alcohol consumption and assess its impact on their overall well-being.

Users can input their daily or weekly alcohol intake, and the app provides personalised feedback based on factors such as age, height, and weight. The tracker helps users understand their drinking patterns, identify potential risks, and make informed decisions about their alcohol consumption.

"The app has changed lives and more importantly has SAVED lives, service users can access support quickly and deescalate situations before they arise."

Gail McGreevy, Chief of Communications, PBNI

    preventive suicides

The PBNI App has delivered significant successes across the Justice Sector, with one of the most profound impacts being the prevention of two suicides. This life-saving intervention underscores the app’s critical role in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

    The Result

The Changing Lives app has revolutionised the way service users access information and support. By providing a centralised platform for accessing critical information.

The app has empowered users to take control of their journey and make informed decisions. With over 3,000 downloads in its first year, the app has far exceeded expectations and has been recognised for its innovative approach and life-saving potential. The app has not only improved communication and access to resources but has also played a crucial role in preventing suicides, underscoring its transformative impact on lives.
